Lately I’ve switched the OS of my fileservers from OpenMediaVault to TrueNAS CORE (on- and off-site backup servers) and TrueNAS Scale a Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) solution. Built on TrueNAS CORE, SCALE adds Linux Containers, VMs (KVM), and scale-out ZFS storage capabilities.

To have the needed CPU power I’ve decided to build a new, more powerfull primary NAS based on the following components:

The 8x 3.5" as well as 8x 2.5" hot-swap bays give me enough room for future storage expansions and the Xeon E3-1240 v6 future proof CPU power to fit my needs.

Long term I want to swap the current spinners with SSD storage.

By the end of the week all parts should have hit my door so that I can start assembling everything this weekend. Will do some pictures of the build process ;-)
